First ever running of the Belmont Stakes

The first Belmont Stakes, with a field of four, was won by a filly, Ruthless, for a prize of $1,800. The race was held at Jerome Park in The Bronx, a track built in 1866 and financed by August Belmont, for whom the race was named. The race was moved to Morris Park Racecourse in 1890 and, finally, to Belmont Park in 1905.
