Youngblood does double duty

Joel Youngblood became the first major league player to collect hits for two teams on the same day. In the third inning of the Mets' 7-4 win over the Cubs, the centerfielder hit a two-run single and was notified the next inning that he had been traded to the Montreal Expos (for Tom Gorman). He was replaced in the lineup by Mookie Wilson and flew immediately from Chicago to Philadelphia to meet up with his new team. Youngblood, 30, made his Expos debut in the sixth inning of a 5-4 loss to the Phillies. He replaced Jerry White in rightfield and singled in the seventh inning. Also notable was that his hits that day came off future Hall of Famers - Ferguson Jenkins (Cubs) and Steve Carlton (Phillies). Youngblood had been hitting .257 for the Mets that season and batted .200 in 40 games with the Expos.
