Gooden strikes out 200 as a rookie

Dwight Gooden, 19, struck out Bobby Brown in the eighth inning of a 5-2 Mets win over the Padres to become the 11th rookie pitcher to strike out 200 batters in one season. Gooden tossed a complete game, allowing two runs with nine strikeouts for his 12th win of the season. In his next six starts, Gooden struck out 74 - including consecutive 16-strikeout performances - to finish with a league-high 276, the most ever by a rookie.
