Thompson is Giants first black player

Hank Thompson became the first African-American to play for the New York Giants, scoring a run in a 4-3 loss to the Dodgers at Ebbets Field. The former Kansas City Monarchs' star broke into the majors with the St. Louis Browns in 1947, but got released before the '48 season and was picked up by the Giants a year later. Thompson, who was the fifth black player to sign in New York, batted .280 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 75 games that season. The following year the third baseman hit .289 with 20 homers and a career-high 91 RBIs.
