Jets get first shutout
The Jets posted the franchise's first shutout, 17-0, over the Kansas City Chiefs at the Polo Grounds. It took four seasons, although it was the first year the team was named the Jets after three as the Titans. The Jets took advantage of three turnovers, including two interceptions by Dainard Paulson. Don Maynard caught a 20-yard scoring pass from Dick Wood in the second quarter for all the points the Jets needed. Bill Mathis ran it in from the 1 in the third quarter and Dick Guesman booted a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. The Jets had only 179 total yards and 10 first downs. They allowed 296 yards to the Chiefs, who were penalized seven times for 103 yards in addition to the three turnovers. With the victory, the Jets improved to 5-5-1 before losing their last three games. The Chiefs dropped to 2-7-2 but won their final three games, including 48-0 over the Jets in the final game of the season in which the Jets committed seven turnovers.
