Mets play longest game ever

Del Crandall and Jesus Alou's RBIs in the top of the 23rd inning gave the Giants an 8-6 win over the Mets and put an end to a 7-hour, 23-minute game, the longest (by time) in major-league history. Gaylord Perry struck out nine in 10 extra-inning frames of relief to get the win in what was the nightcap of a doubleheader witnessed by 50,037 (to start) at Shea Stadium. The Giants took an early 6-0 lead, but the Mets rallied and tied it on Joe Christopher's three-run homer in the seventh. The offenses were blanked until Crandall hit an RBI double to drive in Jim Davenport. Galen Cisco, the sixth pitcher used by the Mets, went the final nine innings. In all, the Mets pitchers faced 93 batters, allowed 17 hits, walked nine and struck out 14. The Mets had 20 hits.
