Islanders win the Stanley Cup
On Bob Nystrom's overtime goal, the Islanders beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 5-4, in Game 6 at Nassau Coliseum to win their first Stanley Cup championship. Nystrom had given the Islanders a 4-2 lead with his goal at 19:46 in the second period, but the Flyers rallied in the third period. John Paddock's goal at 6:02 tied the score at 5. But off assists from John Tonelli and Lorne Henning, Nystrom ended it at 7:11 of overtime, giving the Isles their first title in the franchise's eighth season. The Islanders, 39-28-13 that season, went on to win the next three Stanley Cup titles.
