Sharkey beats Schmeling in rematch

Jack Sharkey earned a 15-round decision over Germany's Max Schmeling to win the world heavyweight championship at Madison Square Garden Bowl in Long Island City. The crowd of 61,863 paid $432,365 to see the Binghamton native avenge his controversial loss to Schmeling in a title fight two years earlier. Sharkey had dominated their 1930 bout, but was disqualified when the referee determined he had hit Schmeling below the belt. Sharkey defeated Primo Carnera in October 1931 to earn another shot at Schmeling. He was awarded the title, but Schmeling's manager, Joe Jacobs, famously complained, "We was robbed!"
