Islanders win fourth consecutive title

Bryan Trottier, John Tonelli and Mike Bossy scored goals in a 97-second span in the first period and the Islanders held on to beat the Edmonton Oilers, 4-2, at Nassau Coliseum for their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup championship. With a sweep of the final (their second straight season doing so), the Islanders joined the Montreal Canadiens as the only NHL teams to win four straight championships. The Islanders shut down the Oilers' high-powered offense, holding them to six goals in the series and Wayne Gretzky to just four assists. Edmonton pulled to within one with second-period goals by Jari Kurri and Mark Messier, but Ken Morrow scored an empty-net goal with 69 seconds left to ice the game. The Islanders went 42-26-12 in the regular season.
