Torre wins 2,000th game
Joe Torre won his 2,000th game as a manager after the visiting Yankees downed the Chicago White Sox, 10-3. The Bombers beat former Yankee Jose Contreras, as Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. Scott Proctor picked up the win in relief of Mike Mussina. Torre, in his 12th and final season with the Yankees, became the first person in major-league history to have acrrued 2,000 wins as a skipper and 2,000 hits as a player. Before taking over the Yankees, Torre had managed the Mets (286 wins), Braves (257) and Cardinals (351). Torre, who went 1,173-767 with the Yankees, is second only to Joe McCarthy (1,460) for most wins in franchise history. The Yanks won six pennants and four World Series titles under Torre, a nine-time All Star who had 2,342 hits.
