Smith gets Mets' first 5-hit game
First baseman Dick Smith, batting leadoff, went 5-for-6 in the Mets' 19-1 rout of the Cubs before a meager crowd of 2,503 at Wrigley Field. With a ninth-inning triple to centerfield, Smith, 25, became the first Met to get five hits in a game. The only out he made was a line drive to rightfield in the second inning. Smith finished with three singles, a double, a triple and a stolen base. He scored three runs and drove in two. Smith, who played just three big-league seasons, batted .223 in 46 games in 1964. Mets third baseman Charley Smith went 3-for-6 with a home run and five RBIs, and Jack Fisher pitched a four-hitter with three strikeouts in the win.
