Shea Stadium hosts the All-Star Game

In the only All-Star Game played at Shea Stadium, the National League staged a ninth-inning comeback to beat the American League, 7-4, before 50,850. Johnny Callison hit a three-run walk-off homer. Willie Mays, who walked and stole second, scored on Orlando Cepeda's single to tie the score at 4. Red Sox pitcher Dick Radatz walked Johnny Edwards, putting two on for Phillies outfielder Callison, who homered to right. With the win, the NL tied the all-time series at 18. Second baseman Ron Hunt, who at the time was batting .311, became the first Met selected as a starter for the Midsummer Classic. He went 1-for-3 before being pinch hit for by Hank Aaron in the ninth.
