Brooklyn's Erskine no-hits Giants

Carl Erskine threw a no-hitter in leading the Dodgers over the crosstown rival Giants, 3-0, before 17,395 at Ebbets Field. Erskine, in his second career no-hitter, had three strikeouts and issued two walks, including one in the first inning to Willie Mays. The righthander, who had no-hit the Cubs in 1952, outdueled Giants starter Al Worthington. Jackie Robinson's bases-loaded walk in the third inning gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead and Duke Snider went 2-for-3 with an RBI. With the win, Erskine improved to 2-2 and the Dodgers to 11-9. Erskine, 29, finished the season 13-11 with a 4.25 ERA. The Dodgers (93-61) won the National League pennant by a game over the Milwaukee Braves. Brooklyn lost to the Yankees in a seven-game series. Erskine compiled a 122-78 record with a 4.00 ERA in his 12-season major-league career with Brooklyn, and later, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
