Whitey Ford wins eight in a month

With the Yankees' 5-1 victory over the Washington Senators at Yankee Stadium, Whitey Ford became the first pitcher in American League history to win eight games in a month. Ford, on three days' rest, allowed an unearned run and five hits and struck out eight in the complete game, improving his record to 14-2. Roger Maris (2-for-3) had three RBIs and Mickey Mantle hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, lifting the Yankees to their 22nd victory in June. Ford, who started the run on June 2 with a 6-2 win over the White Sox, pitched four times on three days' rest and had a 3.49 ERA in the month. He won his only Cy Young Award with a league-high 25 wins and a 3.21 ERA.
