Five days after becoming the Knicks' new general manager, Al Bianchi hired Rick Pitino to replace Bob Hill as head coach. Pitino coached Providence to the NCAA Final Four in 1987. The Knicks had won 24 games in 1986-87. Pitino coached them into the playoffs in his first season after going 38-44. In his second season, the Knicks went 52-30 and finished first in the Atlantic Division. They swept the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round, then lost to the Chicago Bulls in six games in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Pitino returned to college basketball the following season, becoming the head coach at Kentucky.
