Secretariat wins the Triple Crown

Secretariat, ridden by Ron Turcotte, easily pulled away from his competition in the Belmont Stakes to win by 31 lengths and earn horse racing's first Triple Crown in 25 years. The 3-year-old colt crossed the finish line in 2:24, a track record, the fastest 11/2-mile time on an American dirt course, and the largest margin of victory ever posted at the Belmont. Twice a Prince was a distant second.
