Mets top Yanks in first interleague meeting

Dave Mlicki threw a nine-hit shutout, as the Mets defeated the Yankees, 6-0, in their first regular-season interleague game, before 56,188 at Yankee Stadium. The Mets took a 3-0 lead in the first inning after John Olerud hit an RBI double, was driven in on Butch Huskey's single, and Todd Hundley stole home. Olerud, 2-for-5, also had a two-run single in the seventh off Andy Pettitte. Matt Franco went 2-for-4 with two runs. Joe Girardi was 3-for-4 for the Yankees, who went on to win the next two games of the series.
