Yanks unveil Babe Ruth monument
Prior to their 3-2 Opening Day win against Washington, the Yankees honored Babe Ruth with a monument alongside those of Lou Gehrig and Miller Huggins. The monuments originally stood on the field of play, just feet in front of the wall on the warning track in centerfield. When Yankee Stadium was remodeled in 1974, they were relocated beyond the fence in left-centerfield to Monument Park. The three plaques currently stand at the new Yankee Stadium along with monuments honoring Mickey Mantle (1996), Joe DiMaggio (1999), and a 9/11 Tribute (2002).
