Clemens returns

The Yankees' 5-0 win over the Mariners was interrupted with a dramatic seventh-inning announcement informing the 52,553 fans that Roger Clemens, seated in George Steinbrenner's box, had ended his retirement and signed with the Yankees. He announced his retirement in 2003 but returned to play three seasons with his hometown Astros. The Yankees, scuffling at 14-15, convinced the star to return and he signed a prorated, one-year $28-million contract, which was then the highest single-season salary ever in baseball. The 44-year-old went 6-6 with a 4.18 ERA in 99 innings. His 11.57 ERA in the playoffs sent him retiring once more.
