Stottlemyre hits inside-the-park slam
The bases were loaded with Joe Pepitone, Clete Boyer and Roger Repoz on in the fifth inning when pitcher Mel Stottlemyre hit an inside-the-park homer. The hit drove in the deciding runs in the Yankees' 6-3 win over the Red Sox in an afternoon game at Yankee Stadium before 24,594. Stottlemyre struck out in his other two at-bats but connected on one to centerfield off Bill Monbouquette, giving the host Yankees a 6-1 lead and helping is own cause. He allowed two earned runs and struck out five in a complete game. Stottlemyre, 23, batted just .131 that season (.160 for his career), but did hit two home runs, the other on June 5 against the White Sox.
