Rangers coach minds the net

Midway through the second period of a scoreless Stanley Cup Finals Game 2 against the Montreal Maroons, Rangers goalie Lorne Chabot was hit in the eye with a shot and rushed to a hospital. With no backup and the Maroons coach refusing to allow the Rangers use of New York Americans goalie Joe Miller, who was in attendance at the Montreal Forum, Lester Patrick, the 44-year-old coach, put Chabot's pads on and manned the net. Patrick, a former defenseman, made 18 saves. Bill Cook put the Rangers up 1-0 in the third and Nels Stewart tied it and forced overtime. There, Frank Boucher scored at 7:05 and the Rangers evened the series. The NHL adopted a rule requiring teams to have a substitute goalie and the Americans (eliminated in the playoffs) agreed to loan the Rangers Miller for the final three games.
