Isles' championship reign ended
Wayne Gretzky scored twice and assisted on another goal as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Islanders, 5-2, in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals to end the Isles' four-year run as champions. The Islanders fell short in their bid to match the NHL record of five straight, set by the Canadiens' 1956-60 teams. The Oilers, the league's highest-scoring team, held the Islanders to 12 goals in the series - including six that came in their Game 2 victory. The Islanders had swept Edmonton in the finals the year before for what was the franchise's last championship. Jari Kurri's goal 38 seconds into the second period gave the Oilers a 4-0 lead. After Pat Lafontaine scored twice in a span of 32 seconds for New York in the third period, Edmonton's Dave Lumley iced it with a 160-foot empty-netter with 13 seconds remaining in the game to secure the Oilers' first of five Stanley Cup titles in seven years. In 1979, Edmonton was one of four World Hockey Association (WHA) teams to join the NHL.
