Elston Howard becomes first black Yankee

Elston Howard made his major-league debut and became the Yankees' first black player. The Yankees had acquired Howard from the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League in 1950 and he spent the next four years in the minor leagues. In an 8-4 loss to the Red Sox, he entered in the sixth inning as a defensive replacement in leftfield and singled in his first at-bat in the eighth. Howard would become a nine-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher, but spent most of his rookie season as an outfielder with Yogi Berra catching and batted .290 with 10 homers in 97 games. In '63 he became the first African American to win the American League MVP, hitting .287 with 28 homers and 85 RBIs.
