Ebbets Field is demolished
A white wrecking ball signaled the official goodbye to of one of baseball's most popular monuments as Ebbets Field was torn down. The stadium, which cost $750,000 to construct, had served as the Brooklyn Dodgers' home from its opening in 1913 until the team's relocation in 1957 and was known for its intimate configuration and "bandbox" reputation. It also hosted football teams, including the New York Football Dodgers in the 1930s and '40s. A pre-demolition ceremony was attended by former Dodgers Roy Campanella, Ralph Branca and Carl Erskine. Apartments were later built on the Brooklyn site.
