The Mets make their debut

After being rained out the previous night, the New York Mets made their debut against the St. Louis Cardinals, losing 11-4 at Busch Stadium. Roger Craig started for the Mets, giving up five runs in three innings. The first run was scored by the Cardinals' Julian Javier (4-for-5, three runs). Richie Ashburn scored the Mets' first run on Charlie Neal's single in the third and Gil Hodges' homer in the fourth was the franchise's first. Bill White led the Cardinals with three RBIs. Managed by Casey Stengel, the Mets would lose their first nine games and finished the season 40-120.
