Ruth shines amongst All-Stars

Babe Ruth belted the first home run in baseball's first All-Star Game, leading the American League to a 4-2 win at Comiskey Park. The brainchild of a Chicago Tribune sportswriter, the game was a grand exhibition that teamed each league's best players before 47,595 fans. The AL went up 1-0 in the second when Yankees pitcher Lefty Gomez, a career .147 hitter, had an RBI single. Ruth (2-for-4) made it 3-0 in the third when he clobbered a pitch from St. Louis' "Wild" Bill Hallahan into the rightfield stands for a two-run shot. Ruth would also appear in the 1934 All-Star Game, but in what was his last "Ruthian" season, the 38-year-old hit .301 with 34 homers and 103 RBIs.
