Manhattan College upsets West Virginia

In the upset of the college basketball season, unranked Manhattan College (16-9) eliminated West Virginia, 89-84, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Madison Square Garden. The top-seeded Mountaineers, led by sophomore and future Hall of Famer Jerry West, entered 26-1 and were facing a Manhattan team that rebounded from a 5-9 campaign in 1956-57. Jack Powers led Manhattan with 29 points and West was held to 17. The Jaspers went on to lose to Dartmouth, 79-62, in the Eastern Regional semifinals and fell to Maryland, 59-55, in the consolation game.
