College hoopsters nabbed gambling
A gambling scandal swept four New York collegiate basketball programs with several players arrested. A month earlier, two Manhattan College players were arrested for accepting money to throw games and an investigation led to the eventual arrests of three CCNY and three LIU players for point shaving. Among them was LIU's Sherman White, who was leading the nation in scoring. NYU's Harvey Schaaf and Edward Gard, a former LIU player, were charged with encouraging others to accept bribes. The alleged mastermind, Salvatore Sollazzo, a jewelry maker and ex-convict, was indicted on 13 counts of bribery and sentenced to eight years in prison. Two of the CCNY players were sentenced to six months each, Schaaf got a six-month suspended sentence and the LIU players received suspended sentences, except White, who served nine months on Rikers Island. In addition, 32 players from seven colleges around the country also were arrested.
