Mickey Mantle hits 500th homer
With a seventh-inning blast into the rightfield stands at Yankee Stadium, Mickey Mantle became the sixth major-leaguer to join the 500-home run club. Mantle's solo shot, off Orioles reliever Stu Miller, provided the deciding run in the Yankees' 6-5 win. With the Yankees up 5-4 in the seventh, Horace Clarke grounded back to the mound and Dick Howser struck out before Mantle's milestone moment. He joined what was then a short list that included Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams and Mel Ott. The 18,872 fans gave Mantle, 35, a roaring ovation that carried into the next inning. Playing first base and batting third, Mantle went 2-for-4 with two runs. The iconic Yankee went on to hit .245 with 22 homers in his next-to-last season. He finished his Hall of Fame career with 536 home runs.
