Jackie Robinson steals home

Jackie Robinson scored the deciding run on a fifth-inning steal of home in the Brooklyn Dodgers' 4-2 win over the host Pirates at Forbes Field. It was the 10th stolen base of his rookie year and first of 19 career swipes of home. Earlier in the season, Pirates pitcher Fritz Ostermueller drilled Robinson with a pitch. In a rematch, with the score tied at 2, Robinson reached first on a fielder's choice and moved to third on Carl Furillo's single. Furillo stole second and with Ostermueller unsuspecting of another steal, Robinson took off for home. The Hall of Famer had 197 career steals in the regular season. His most famous, though, was a steal of home in the '55 World Series against the rival Yankees.
