Islanders win third consecutive title

Behind Mike Bossy's two goals, the Islanders beat the Canucks, 3-1, in Vancouver to sweep the Finals and win their third straight Stanley Cup. Butch Goring put the Islanders up and Stan Smyl tied the score at 18:09 in the first period for the Canucks. Bossy scored the go-ahead goal at the 5-minute mark in the second period and added another at 8:00 - both on power plays. Billy Smith made 23 saves. The Islanders went 54-16-10 and were second in the NHL in goals scored and goals allowed in the regular season. They swept the semifinals (against the Quebec Nordiques) and outscored the Canucks, 18-12, in the Finals. The Islanders, who had beaten Philadelphia for their first championship in 1980 and Minnesota in 1981, swept Edmonton in 1983 for their fourth straight crown.
