Three announce run for Amityville mayoral race

In what will be the most significant turnover of elected leadership in Amityville Village in more than a decade, three candidates have said they will run for mayor next month — James Wandell, an accountant, board of trustees member Edward Johnson and deputy mayor Peter Casserly.

Six newcomers also have said they will challenge for two trustees’ seats.

The vacancies opened when Mayor Peter Imbert and trustees Johnson and Rich Ubert said they would not seek re-election in March. One more seat could open up should Casserly win the mayor’s race. He would then appoint someone to fill the last two years of his term as trustee.

The six who have submitted paperwork for the trustees’ race are Joseph Morin, Jessica Bernius, Peter Himmelmann, Kevin Smith, Bruce Jenney and Charles Walters.

All candidates must still submit certificates of acceptance by Tuesday. All seats in Amityville have four-year terms. The mayor earns $14,000 and trustees earn $7,000.
