Tiger Woods can't find the magic, misses cut at U.S. Open

Tiger Woods remains in free fall. The 14-time major champion shot a second-round 76 Thursday for a 36-hole total of 16-over- par 156 to miss the cut at the U.S. Open for the second time in 19 appearances, and he was ahead of only one player in the 156-man field when he finished.

"On a golf course like this, you get exposed and you have to be precise and dialed in," Woods said. "Obviously, I didn't have that. Obviously, I need to get a little better for the British Open, and I'll keep working at it."

Woods has made the cut only three times in the six events he has played this year, and it's clear he believes a major part of the solution is to keep showing up and trying to play tournament golf.

"My schedule is set for the summer," he said. "I'm playing every other week. I'm excited about it."

Coming off a first-round 80, Woods said he "hit the ball a little bit better, but I made nothing today. I didn't make any putts the first two days."

Day collapses on course

Jason Day collapsed and fell to the green on his final hole Friday, then got up and finished with a bogey for a 70. He was diagnosed with an episode of vertigo last year.

Day is in contention at 2 under. "Jason was diagnosed with Benign Positional Vertigo and is resting comfortably," Day's agent, Bud Martin, said in a statement. "He is hopeful he will be able to compete this weekend . . . "

Woods expressed concern for his friend. "I played with him at Memorial, and we talked about it in depth," Woods said. "He did a blood panel and all that stuff. I hope he's OK."

Campbell leads amateurs

Low amateur Brian Campbell followed his opening 67 with a 72 that left him at 1 under and tied for 12th. He briefly was tied for the lead early in the round. Six amateurs made the cut, the most in 40 years.
