Miguel Cabrera hit his 42nd homer, putting him in Triple Crown position, and Doug Fister pitched his first career shutout to help the host Tigers beat the Twins, 8-0, yesterday as they pulled to within a half-game of the White Sox in the AL Central race.

Chicago lost, 4-2, to the Angels late last night. The Angels are 21/2 games behind the A's for the second AL wild-card spot.

Detroit's Cabrera hit a solo shot in the fourth to tie him with the Rangers' Josh Hamilton for the most homers in the AL. Cabrera has a relatively comfortable league lead with a .332 batting average and 131 RBIs.

Rays 11, Blue Jays 5: B.J. Upton and Jose Molina homered during a six-run fifth inning as host Tampa Bay moved to within 3 1/2 games of Oakland for the second AL wild card. Toronto has lost 17 consecutive series at Tampa Bay -- two short of the AL record. The Yankees won 19 straight home series against the St. Louis Browns from 1946-51.

Reds win NL Central

Jay Bruce was Mr. Clinch again, hitting the homer that got the Reds' championship party started on the second try. Bruce's 34th homer put host Cincinnati ahead to stay, and they made good on their second chance to win the NL Central title by beating the Dodgers, 6-0.

Giants win NL West

Madison Bumgarner earned his 16th win as host San Francisco clinched the division with an 8-4 win over the Padres.

Braves 8, Phillies 2: Freddie Freeman hit a three-run homer as visiting Atlanta, the leader for the NL's first wild-card, reduced its magic number for securing a playoff spot to three.

Cardinals 5, Cubs 4: John Jay's RBI double in the 10th inning lifted visiting St. Louis, which has a three-game lead over the Dodgers for the second NL wild-card spot. -- AP
