J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer off closer Cody Allen in the ninth inning, helping the visiting Tigers rally for a 4-2 win over the Indians last night.

The Tigers remained a half-game behind the first-place Royals in the AL Central. Detroit has a five-game lead over the Yankees and Indians for the second wild-card spot.

Royals 2, Rangers 1: Salvador Perez singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth for host Kansas City. Texas made history as Derek Holland became the 60th player it used, breaking a tie with three other teams for the most used in a season in major-league history.

Mariners 6, Athletics 5: Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer as visiting Seattle handed Oakland its fifth loss in six games.

Dodgers 4, Nationals 1: Clayton Kershaw (17-3) gave up three hits and one run, walked two and struck out eight. Kershaw, who leads the majors in wins and ERA (1.70), also went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Phillies 4, Braves 0: A day after Cole Hamels and three relievers no-hit the Braves, Kyle Kendrick allowed three hits in seven innings as the Phillies made it back-to-back shutouts.

Cardinals 6, Pirates 4: Adam Wainwright (16-9) had three RBIs for host St. Louis.
