SAN FRANCISCO — The Mets’ first round of September call-ups will be a small one: righthanded relievers Tim Peterson and Eric Hanhold.

Both will join the club when rosters expand to up to 40 players Saturday, manager Mickey Callaway said. The Mets will recall more players, including first baseman/leftfielder Dominic Smith, after the minor-league season ends Monday.

Peterson already has spent time with the Mets this year, posting a 7.54 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 19 games. Hanhold is looking at his first taste of the majors and will need to be added to the 40-man roster.

The Mets acquired Hanhold from the Brewers last September as the player-to-be-named in the Neil Walker deal.

MLB Pipeline, which describes Hanhold’s fastball as touching 98 mph with “excellent life,” ranks the 24-year-old as the No. 29 prospect in the Mets’ system. He opened the year with Double-A Binghamton, where he had a 2.84 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 25 13 innings, before earning a promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas. Hanhold didn’t fare nearly as well at the new level (7.11 ERA, 1.68 WHIP).

In October, Hanhold will head to the Arizona Fall League.

Among the other September call-up candidates: infielders Luis Guillorme, Jack Reinheimer and Gavin Cecchini.

Achy Amed

A morning toothache led to an emergency root canal for Amed Rosario on Friday, Callaway said. Rosario was back at the ballpark in time to take grounders at shortstop. The manager said Rosario was available off the bench, with Jose Reyes starting in his place.

Extra bases

The Mets put catcher Kevin Plawecki on the paternity list, with reliever Jacob Rhame taking his place on the roster — technically Rhame’s 10th stint with the team this season .  .  . Devin Mesoraco returned to the starting lineup, his first game since Aug. 23, when he experienced neck tightness .  .  . Second baseman Jeff McNeil has a hit in 15 of his past 16 starts.
