Too few companies buy in to golf networking program

Sometimes the business of golf is . . . no business at all, even in a golf haven like Long Island.
Steve Wilson of Babylon, who runs SMW Marketing from his home, found that out when he tried to sign up Long Island companies to join World Golf Network, a franchise operation.
For $4,200, the companies could send employees who are golfers to play seven Long Island courses, one each between April 22 and Oct. 14.
Included would be breakfast, range balls, a golf cart, lunch and, most important of all, a networking opportunity.
Ten companies signed up, Wilson said. But to make it profitable, he needed more, and so his plan to start a Long Island chapter of World Golf Network hit the bunkers, and he has temporarily suspended his efforts.
People did not see the larger picture, a chance to network during a five-hour round of golf, and focused only on the cost - $600 a round, Wilson said. Some private golf club members pay more, he argued.
"I couldn't get past the hurdle of the $4,200 divided by seven," Wilson said. But, he said, he is not done.
"Some [who joined] are upset it's not happening," Wilson said.
