Officials say Long Island received a record-breaking amount of rainfall overnight, flooding roadways and leaving hundreds of motorists stranded.

The rain was blamed for a fatal accident involving a truck and an SUV on the Long Island Expressway in Melville.

Fire officials say about 30 to 50 cars were submerged Wednesday morning on the Southern State Parkway between exits 38 and 39.

The torrential storm also flooded homes and backyards, damaging many properties across Long Island.

A state of emergency was declared in Islip and Babylon.
