The Southold Town board represents the few hundred people who live on Fishers Island, which lies just off the coast of Connecticut.

Whenever a public hearing is required for anything involving public spending on the small island, the town board has to meet twice — once on the mainland and once on Fishers Island itself.

The town currently is considering issuing up to $500,000 in bonds to make needed improvements and upgrades to the north and south ferry ramps at the island’s only ferry terminal, where almost everything used on the island must be unloaded. The project is expected to cost up to $861,000, with the rest of the cost coming from ferry district revenue.

The town board will hold its first public hearing on the proposal at 7 p.m. on Dec. 3 at the Fishers Island Community Center and will reconvene the hearing at 7:32 p.m. on Dec. 4 at its regular meeting in Southold Town Hall.
