Organizers of the Brentwood Clean Streets Project are hoping volunteers will help pick up one ton of garbage within 10 square miles on Saturday when the Clean Streets Committee and the Town of Islip host a community-wide cleanup.

"We want to get people out of their homes and taking an active role in their community," said Marcos Maldonado, who along with his cousin, Michael Ramos, head the the Clean Streets Committee. "It's important for people to love their community. It’s important for people to come out and work with their neighbors and address common community issues."

Vans provided by local nonprofits will transport volunteers to and from cleanup locations, Maldonado said. Following the event, volunteers will gather at the Brentwood Recreation Center for food provided by Applebee’s.

Last year, Maldonado’s group hosted events to paint over graffiti in Brentwood, Central Islip, and North Bay Shore, he said. This year, the group will focus on garbage removal and beautification, he said.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the recreation center, 99 Third Ave.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the event or reporting areas with large amounts of litter and garbage can call 347-292-9272.
