Town of Oyster Bay could have new landmarks

The Town of Oyster Bay Landmarks Preservation Commission has scheduled a special meeting for Aug. 24 to consider whether to recommend landmarks designation for the former Maine Maid Inn in Jericho and the Community United Methodist Church in East Norwich.

At its July 27 meeting, the commission agreed to consider landmarks applications submitted by the East Norwich Civic Association for the two structures. The Maine Maid Inn, built in 1789, is believed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad. Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone for the church on May 18, 1901, when he was vice president.

At its August meeting, the commission will decide whether to recommend designation to the Town Board, which will make the final decision.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Town Board Hearing Room, 54 Audrey Ave. in Oyster Bay.
