In response to complaints about increased traffic on local roads, Riverhead officials are asking the state Department of Transportation to conduct a study to see whether the existing 35-mph speed limit should be reduced.

The town board originally planned to lower the speed to 20 mph, but later decided it should be reduced only to 30 mph.

The proposed new speed limits, if adopted, would apply to all of Peconic Bay Boulevard, Meetinghouse Creek Road, Hubbard Avenue and Sound Shore Road.
