Town OKs funds for Roslyn Country Club

Having voted to purchase the Roslyn Country Club last month, the North Hempstead Town board on Tuesday night authorized the bonding for the project. The board voted 5-2 to use money from the Environmental Legacy Fund.

Council members Dina DeGiorgio and Angelo Ferrara, who opposed the club’s purchase in June, voted against the resolution.

After last month’s lengthy debate during the public comments portion of the meeting, only one speaker expressed dissent over the issuance of bonding. Last month, residents who lived near the country club opposed the sale, which the town said will result in a new park and open space. Opponents argued that homeowners who live nearby should buy and restore the property themselves.

Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman thanked the speaker for his concerns but explained that the sale would “have an incredibly positive impact” on the community.

“I believe that you will find when this project is completed that we have preserved a gem within the Roslyn Country Club community,” he said. “Other communities that have such gems can no longer say the same, because they're gone.”
