Demolition workers in hazmat suits tore down a vacant Bellport house on Thursday — the fourth abandoned home razed by Brookhaven Town since Sept. 1.

The two-story house on Sundial Lane was demolished because town inspectors found it structurally unsound, Supervisor Edward P. Romaine said. Town officials had condemned the structure in 2012, he said.

Workers wore protective clothing because of mold and asbestos, town officials said.

“Unfortunately, this town has torn down a house a week because these are a scar on the town,” Romaine said.

The town plans to raze seven more houses on its “Dirty Dozen” list of unsafe homes by the end of the year, he said.

“I know our neighbors are very, very happy” that the house was torn down, Councilwoman Connie Kepert said.
