Town to consider plan for former yacht club

Plans to develop the site of the former Knickerbocker Yacht Club in Port Washington have begun anew.

The Town of North Hempstead on Tuesday scheduled a public hearing for Jan. 24 to discuss a developer’s plans to build a three-story housing complex with parking and a 4,000-square-foot restaurant on the site of the yacht club, which closed in 2009.

The applicant is 433 Main Street Realty, based in Forest Hills in Queens.

The town board struck the item from the November agenda after the applicant said it was not ready to proceed.

Town Board member Dina DeGiorgio, who began her term Jan. 1 after ousting Fred Pollack in November’s elections, said she will meet with the planning department to learn more about the development, which needs site plan approval and a special use permit from the board. Pollack opposed the plan.

During Tuesday night’s meeting, the town board also approved using a $250,000 grant from the state to build two new greenhouses and eco-classrooms at Clark Botanic Garden in Albertson.

The garden has only one greenhouse and needs more space, town board member Thomas K. Dwyer said.

The Strategic Investment Program grant, awarded by the state Dormitory Authority, will fund construction of warm- and cold-climate greenhouses of 1,152-square-feet apiece and two 800-square-foot classrooms for up to 30 students.
