The holiday season is starting early in Nassau County.

County Executive Edward Mangano Thursday kicked off the annual U.S. Marines Toys for Tots program at Oheka Castle in Huntington. Communities across Nassau and Suffolk collect toys through the program, which are then distributed by members of the Armed Services to local, underprivileged children.

Mangano was joined at the event by more than 200 local children, area Marines and local business and civic leaders.

The county executive also announced that later this month Nassau children can begin sending their holiday wish lists directly to the North Pole through a network of “Santa’s Mailboxes.”

The county will place six red-and-green mailboxes at the administration buildings of six Nassau parks. They include Cantiague Park in Hicksville, Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, Grant Park in Hewlett, Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn-North Hills, Mackey Park in Roosevelt and Wantagh Park in Wantagh.

The mailboxes will be accessible from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning Nov. 14 through Dec. 16.

Children who send their letters to Santa will get a “Santa-Gram” reply from the North Pole. All letters should include the child’s name and address. Postage is not necessary.
