Traffic alerts focus on school crossings

The Town of Huntington recently completed a traffic project to make crossings safer for some South Huntington school district students.

The town “pinched” the road at two Wolf Hill Road crossings near the Birchwood Intermediate School. The changes at Greenwich Avenue and Candy Lane shortens the distance between curbs, improving pedestrian safety by making the crossing shorter and increasing traffic safety by forcing vehicles to slow down.

The town also installed rectangular rapid flash beacons at the Birchwood School crossing on Greenwich. When activated, the beacons alert motorists that someone is about to cross.

“We are happy that the town was able to identify and implement measures that will address the district and residents’ concerns, making crossing Wolf Hill Road safer for residents and students,” Town Supervisor Frank Petrone said.

The changes came at the request of school district, Birchwood Intermediate administrators, the school’s Parent-Teachers Association and local residents.

The complete project cost about $100,000.
