A woman remains in critical condition and a man is dead after they were struck by cars in separate incidents Sunday, police said.

In the first incident, a 26-year-old woman was struck by a black sedan traveling north on Manhattan Avenue in Williamsburg at about 3:20 a.m., police said. The woman, who was not identified, was crossing the street at the intersection of Meeker and Manhattan avenues when she was struck. The vehicle then fled the scene, police said.

About 40 minutes later just after 4 a.m., a 43-year-old man was hit and killed by a van on the Van Wyck Expressway as he tried to fix a flat tire, said Joeseph Pentangelo, a Port Authority spokesman.

The man, who parked his 2001 Chevrolet Malibu on the left shoulder of the southbound expressway near JFK Airport, was pinned after the 2010 Chrysler van slammed into him from behind, Pentangelo said.

The driver of the van and two passengers were taken to Jamaica Hospital, Pentangelo added. A 46-year-old woman, who was in the passenger seat of the Chevrolet Malibu at the time of the crash, was taken to Jamaica Hospital.
