U.S. Merchant Marine Academy names Susan L. Dunlap as deputy superintendent

A new deputy superintendent has been named at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point.

Capt. Susan L. Dunlap, who retired from the Navy after 28 years, will take the newly created post in January.

Dunlap had previously worked at U.S. Naval Forces Africa, where she served as director of the Africa Engagement Group. She also led the Military Sealift Command, Far East, according to a statement released by the academy.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime, to work in an academic environment at a distinguished institution in a vibrant and scenic location,” Dunlap said in a statement.

Dunlap’s appointment follows that of the school’s new superintendent, retired Army Col. James Helis, who was sworn in to the job in July.

The office of deputy superintendent was created, in part, to oversee a new risk-management office established to avoid issues of financial improprieties that had been uncovered after a 2009 probe by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
