The winter vacation has been no break at all for Uniondale High School's show choir, which is practicing eight hours per day preparing for the Show Choir National Championship on March 8 in Manhattan.

The choir, Rhythm of the Knight, will be performing under the direction of director Lynnette Carr-Hicks. Last year, the Uniondale group came close to winning the championship. This time, the team is going for the title.

“We have a lot of work to do because we want to go to nationals and we want to take that trophy home,” Carr-Hicks said. “This is probably the first time they’ve ever danced, first time they’ve ever sung. A lot of them don’t take private lessons, so to see them on stage...is absolutely amazing.”

As a senior, it will be Michael Walker’s final show choir competition. The choir president said he is enthusiastic that the group will bring home the big trophy this time around.

“The biggest trophy is the one that I really want,” said Walker, 17. “The other little ones would be nice, but I really want the big one.”
